HARVARD FIRE DEPARTMENT
IMPORTANT CARBON MONOXIDE INFORMATION
State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan and Chief Don Hurme wish to inform homeowners that as of March 31, 2006, carbon monoxide alarms are required in all residences with potential sources of carbon monoxide.
For most residential buildings the new regulations state that carbon monoxide alarms are required on every level of the home or dwelling including habitable portions of basements and attics. On levels with sleeping areas the alarms must be placed within ten feet of the bedroom doors. The following options for CO alarms are allowed by the regulations.
- Battery operated with battery monitoring
- Plug-ins with battery back-up
- Hard-wired with battery back-up
- Low voltage systems
- Wireless
- Qualified combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
"Fire departments are currently required to inspect smoke alarms when homes are being sold and transferred. Starting March 31, 2006 fire departments will now inspect all residences upon sale and transfer for carbon monoxide alarms."
A flyer was recently sent out to all residences in town with information about carbon monoxide. Click here to see the flyer.
